IX century
Rurik’s hill fort
Here the Russian statehood was born.
There was the residence of Rurik the Prince, who started the first Russian ruling dynasty. In 862, he was summoned to govern by Novgorodians.

Troitsky Excavation
This is the only place where you can visit the Theatre of Time: go down the stairs from the 21st century to the 10th century, walk on the soil where the first people of Novgorod used to walk. 

XI century 
The Novgorod Kremlin
The Novgorod Kremlin or Detinets (another name used by people of Novgorod) is one of the most ancient kremlins which exist in Russia. It was founded in 1044.

XII century
St Anthony's Monastery
According to the legend, the monastery was founded by Anthony of Rome. He arrived in Novgorod on a stone, making a 3 day wonder voyage around Europe. This stone is still kept at the porch of the Cathedral of the Nativity of Our Lady.

Church of St. Parasceva the Friday 
In summer and winter there is always a path lying around the church that was built 1207. Many girls in Novgorod believe that if you run around the church 3 times, you will achieve family happiness. 

XIV century 
Church of the Dormition of Our Lady on Volotovo field
According to legends, the name of the Volotovo field comes from the mythological giants – the Volots – who were living in this region. The temple became worldwide famous thanks to the unique fresco art dated 1363.

Faceted Archbishop Chamber
This is the place where in 1478 Ivan the Third’s order on the Novgorod republic joining the Moscow State was announced. Here the name Russia was pronounced for the first time.

XVI century
White (Alekseevskaya) Tower
Out of 60 towers of the Great roundabout city, that were protecting Novgorod, only one tower survived to this day. The 4943 meter long circle hill around the city is included in the UNESCO list.

XVII century
Cathedral of Our Lady of the Sign
The temple art is interesting for a secular view: among the figures of the great Judgment Day composition there is a picture of a man in a short German dress and shoes, whose face reminds of Peter the First.

XVIII century
Arcade Сomplex of the Courtyard
On the territory of the Guestyard there was Yaroslav the Wise’s palace in the 11th century. In the 12th – 15th centuries there was the town’s meeting square. The Guestyard was built according to the Peter the First’s decree: he was fond of order so he didn’t like the chaotic character of the Novgorod Courtyard. After the Second World War the only parts of the Guestyard that remained were the Gate Tower and the long white arcade complex. 

XIX century 
Nobility Assembly Hall, Fine Arts Museum
As proposed by Alexander the Second the 1000th Jubilee of Russia was celebrated in the Governor Nobility Assembly Hall. Nowadays in the Fine Arts Museum you will see The Opening of the Millenium of Russia Monument in 1862 - the magnificent painting by Bogdan Willewalde.  

XX century 
Veliky Novgorod Central Railway Station
The railway station building was built in 1953 according to the unique project by the famous architect Igor Yavein. The main present for the 60th year jubilee was the launch of Lastochka – express St. Petersburg – Veliky Novgorod train. 

XXI century
Musical Statue of S. Rachmaninoff
Sergey Rakhmaninov was born and spent his childhood on the Novgorod land. Later he wrote: "One of the most important childhood memories for me is connected with 4 notes which were rung by the great bells of the St. Sophia Cathedral. I used to hear them often when my Grandmother was taking me to the church service on holidays". At the square near the monument dedicated to the great composer you can hear his immortal masterpieces any time of the year.
